We often get asked how old you have to be to buy CBD, and indeed to use CBD, so we thought we’d take the time to answer that question fully because it’s an important one.
The legality of CBD is its own discussion, and we have many articles explaining the legality in various jurisdictions that you can check out in the Plant & Hemp Journal pages.
Logically, if CBD is not legal where you are, then age doesn’t matter. But if you are based in one of the growing numbers of places where CBD is legal, then let’s get into how age limits work.
The Variables to How Old Do You Have to Be to Buy CBD?
Because it’s CBD, and we’re early in this process, there is very rarely a straight answer to any question, and the same applies here.
There is much to consider before getting to a full and definitive answer to this question. Firstly, the kind of CBD you are looking to purchase.
If you are buying CBD in somewhere where medical or recreational marijuana is legal, then the CBD may be derived from marijuana plants as opposed to industrial hemp plants. As a result, these CBD products may have higher (often much higher) than the trace amounts of THC legally allowed in hemp-derived CBD.
In these cases, the age limit is the same as it would be for marijuana products, which is usually 21.
There are of course the additional variables of age limits being different between countries and states.
The Straight Answer on How Old Do You Have to Be to Buy CBD?
There is, however, a straight answer to be found here, when the variables do not impact your purchase.
The legal age for the purchase of CBD is 18.
Again, this can change in certain countries and jurisdictions, but it will never go higher than that. Any CBD supplier (ourselves included) will strictly enforce this legal age limit on all purchases.
Additionally, there is an agreement of faith at the point of purchase that those who are over 18 will not purchase CBD on behalf of those who are under 18.
What About Medical CBD for Children?
So what about all this news you’ve heard about CBD and its medicinal potential for children and young people?
This is an interesting and important subject to dive into, we’ve done it long form before, but we’re going to have a hop into it here too, because it’s a cool topic to swim around it.
There is one CBD product that has FDA approval in the US and is currently being prescribed specifically for children to help reduce seizures caused by certain kinds of epilepsy.
This drug is called Epidiolex and it may well be the start of the medical CBD revolution, but at the moment it is the only drug containing CBD.
Obviously, if your child is prescribed Epidiolex, then you should give your child Epidiolex, this does not classify under usual age restrictions.
There have also been some anecdotal reports of doctors prescribing CBD for children for other reasons, such as anxiety. Obviously there is no evidence of this, doctor patient confidentiality is real, but if this does happen to you, we do not advise either way, if you feel it’s the right thing to do, and your doctor does too, who are we to judge you?
However, when it comes to the products you buy from us, we sell them with the intention of adult usage, our products are solely for those over the age of 18, and that is how we expect it to stay for the foreseeable future.
We do not approve of targeting children when marketing anything that is put into the body unless it has all of the necessary scientific research behind it, and CBD simply doesn’t at this point.
So we are happy to stay within the law, and to answer the question again and create a nice, punchy conclusion to this fairly winding road of an article, let us repeat this again. How Old Do You Have to Be to Buy CBD?
…The legal age for the purchase of CBD is 18.
Is there a difference in the law where you are? Is the age limit for CBD purchases higher? What do you think of Epidiolex gaining FDA approval? Let us know in the comments below.
