It’s an understandable question, and it’s worth more than the one-word answer you may get in some places.
So, let’s get into the ins and out of CBD oils and discuss whether they are safe, and how safe they are.
What is CBD?
Let’s start with the basics, shall we? To know if something is safe, it is necessary to first know exactly what it is.
CBD (cannabidiol) is a cannabinoid which naturally occurs in cannabis plants. Unlike THC, which is the cannabinoid which causes the ‘high’ you are probably aware of, CBD is not psychoactive and has no such effects.
While THC occurs mainly in marijuana plants, CBD is found predominantly in industrial hemp plants, which in turn have much lower THC content.
CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which helps to control various functions including fertility, memory, and pain.
How exactly it does that is still a cause for debate, and there is a great deal of scientific research being carried out to discover if, and indeed what health benefits exist.
However, at this point, CBD is not considered a medical product, and it is for this reason that there can be safety concerns.
Is CBD Oil Safe and When It’s Considered Not Safe…
CBD as a cannabinoid is not considered to be unsafe. As long as you start with a light dose, and never push your limits, it should be fine.
However, as CBD is sold as a dietary product, as opposed to a medical product, it is not regulated in the same way medical products are.
As a result, regulators are considerably less vigorous when it comes to ensuring that what is in a CBD product is the same as what is labelled.
This means that if you buy a CBD oil from a less than a trustworthy supplier, you can’t know for sure exactly what it is you’re buying.
The amount of CBD in the oil could be different from stated, or there could even be no CBD in the oil at all, being replaced by an unnamed substance, which is never a cause for comfort.
So when it comes to the safety of CBD oil, it isn’t so much the oil that is the concern, but where you are getting it from.
There are trusted and respected suppliers selling high-quality CBD oils, and it is highly advisable to stick with them and not to ever buy CBD oils from a supplier you don’t trust 100%.
Is My CBD Oil Safe? How to Check…
If you are trying CBD oils for the first time, it is highly recommended that you start with something gentle, no more than 5%, maybe something like this 1.2% Coconut Spray from Love CBD.
If this oil feels like it’s enough or you, stop there. There’s no advantage to trying to push your tolerance levels with CBD, sticking with what works for you is the best way.
If a lighter strength oil doesn’t feel like enough, then consider going up a little to something stronger, like this 6.6% oil from Pharma Hemp.
You can go up again if you feel the need, or try other products, it’s entirely up to you. Just remember, easy does it, your body will tell you what it does and doesn’t need.
The only other thing to be aware of is, as mentioned above, to always be careful of where you get your products from.
You will find a good number of CBD oil suppliers (I know! We’re not the only ones and we’ll admit that, weird, huh?) who ensure they only offer high-quality products that offer what they say they do.
There may be options that seem cheaper, and may promise more, such as guaranteed health benefits. But it is worth remembering that there is no guarantee on the health benefits of CBD at this point.
Research is being carried out, and there have certainly been some positive results, but confirmation is still waiting, which is why CBD oils are not yet regulated as medical products.
As long as you remember to back away when something is too good to be true, only use trusted suppliers, and make sure to never try and push yourself past your natural limits, then there is nothing to suggest that CBD is unsafe.
